Meat Loaf Returns to Planet Hollywood for More Slightly Awkward Shows
Legendary rocker Meat Loaf (real name: Marvin Lee Aday) is coming back to Planet Hollywood as part of “Rocktellz and Cocktails,” a series of performances touted as a mix of rock concert and storytelling.
Meat Loaf did a series of 18 shows at Planet Hollywood previously, and will do another 24 shows starting Feb. 13, 2014.
Meat Loaf’s voice isn’t what it once was, but he belts out his hits with enthusiasm, with the assistance of a fairly unobtrusive backing track.
Hits in the show include, “I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That),” “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” and “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” from his smash “Bat Out Of Hell” album.
The show also features some playful banter, a slide show of photos from Meat Loaf’s family album, and a bevy of nubile back-up dancers to ensure a reasonable T&A quotient. It’s a Vegas show, after all. It’s the law.
Through the years, Meat Loaf has announced he’s retiring, but the lure of performing for live audiences (and cashy-cash, no doubt) keep pulling him back in.
It’s best to adjust your expectations with a show like this, much as you would for Britney Spears’ “Piece of Me,” also at Planet Hollywood. These shows aren’t about the singer actually singing so much. They’re more about the experience of seeing famous performers, live and in person, against the backdrop of some Las Vegas razzmatazz.
As with Britney Spears’ show, Meat Loaf’s is a combination of cringing and nostalgia, with a non-stop stream of hit songs you know by heart. If you love Britney, you’ll love her show. Ditto, The Loaf.
