The New York Giants have lost quarterback Daniel Jones to a season-ending knee injury, which occurred in a blowout loss against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
Jones underwent an MRI on Monday that confirmed a torn ACL in his right knee. He will undergo surgery and miss the remainder of the season.
Jones missed the previous three games with a neck injury, which occurred in Week 5 during a shellacking by the Miami Dolphins.
Jones started for the Giants against the Raiders in Week 9 but exited in the second quarter due to a noncontact knee injury. He completed 4-of-9 passes for 25 yards and added nine rushing yards on two attempts. He was sacked twice.
Jones signed a four-year contract extension worth $160 million in the off-season. The extension was a polarizing issue for the fan base. Even though he had a stellar season in 2022 and led the Giants to a playoff berth and first-round victory against the Minnesota Vikings, die-hard fans didn’t believe Jones was a franchise quarterback worthy of a huge pay raise.
Jones struggled this season behind an atrocious offensive line. He completed only two touchdown passes and was picked off six times in six games. Although he never blamed the O-line for his neck injury, he took a beating and was sacked 26 times in the first five games of the season.
Next Man Up: Tommy DeVito, Matt Barkley
Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor filled in for Jones until Taylor sustained a serious rib injury against the New York Jets in Week 8. The Giants sent Taylor to the IR, and he won’t return until after the bye in Week 13.
Tommy DeVito, an undrafted rookie from Illinois, came off the bench for the Giants in each of the last two games. DeVito had a final stat line of negative one-yard in a soul-crushing overtime loss against the Jets in Week 8.
DeVito fared much better in a loss against the rejuvenated Raiders. He completed 15-for-20 passes for 175 yards. He threw a touchdown in garbage time, but also tossed two interceptions and was sacked six times.
DeVito expects to earn his first start in Week 10 against the Dallas Cowboys.
The Giants signed Barkley to the practice squad last week, but he wasn’t active against the Raiders. Barkley will most likely serve as the backup behind DeVito until Taylor returns from the IR.
Barkley is a former USC quarterback who was a fourth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013. He has a 2-5 record as a starter and went 1-5 with the Chicago Bears in 2016. He last won a game in 2018 during a spot start for the Buffalo Bills. Over his career, Barkley completed 59.7% of his passes for eight touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
Giants a Tanking Candidate
Now that the Giants are 2-7, they’re among a handful of teams that will most likely tank the rest of the season for a shot at the #1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. USC quarterback Caleb Williams, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, is the betting favorite to become the #1 pick in the draft.
The Giants have two difficult upcoming NFC East road games. They head to Dallas to play the first-place Cowboys in Week 10, and then visit the nation’s capital to play the Washington Commanders in Week 11. They host the New England Patriots in Week 12 before their bye.
After the bye, the Giants hit the road for away games against the New Orleans Saints (Week 15) and Philadelphia Eagles (Week 16) on Christmas. They host three more home games against the Green Bay Packers (Week 14), Los Angeles Rams (Week 17), and the Eagles (Week 18).
The Cowboys (5-3) are a huge -16 favorite next Sunday. The Cowboys have a 5-3 record against the point spread (ATS) while the Giants are 2-6-1 ATS.
The Giants are the lowest-scoring team (11.2 points per game) in the NFL this season. The points total failed to reach the over in all but one game this season. Betting the under has been profitable at 8-1 this season.
DeVito inherits the worst passing attack in the NFL. The Giants average 155 passing yards per game this season. Seven teams average 100 more yards per game (255+) than the Giants this season.
The Giants are generating 268.9 yards of total offense this season, the lowest in the NFL. Running back Saquon Barkley also missed multiple games with a high ankle sprain.

Unfortunately the Giants immediate future looks bleak especially with 2 QB’s out and Devito trying to navigate with a shaky offensive line ! The defense has been inconsistent most of the year and players seem not always prepared for game action.
